Fire-enameled chalice and paten in the Romanesque style (item 127)
The fire-enameled chalice and paten stand out for the beauty and brilliance of their colors. In fact, this set is unique in that it is entirely hand-enameled using the cloisonné technique.
Cloisonné is an artistic enamel decoration technique. Thin wires (filigree), strips, or small metal partitions (usually copper)—known as “cloisons” in French—are soldered or glued to a backing plate of the piece being created.
Next, enamel is poured into the areas outlined by the metal, creating a sort of mosaic whose tiles are precisely defined by the metal strips. And that is how the cloisonné technique gives rise to true masterpieces.
The enamel decoration depicts the figures of the Twelve Apostles on the cup and the symbols of the four Evangelists at the base, while the handle and the paten are both decorated with floral motifs.
The chalice and paten are in the Romanesque style, and the enamel decoration stands out against the 925 sterling silver. Furthermore, the chalice is made even more precious by its interior, which is plated with 24-karat gold.
