Molina 12 Apostles Chalice in Romanesque style (Item No. 124)
The Molina 12 Apostles chalice is a precious Romanesque-style chalice that boasts a wealth and variety of engravings.
In fact, this chalice is entirely hand-engraved—on the base, the stem, and the bowl—and is silver-plated on the outside, whereas the inside of the bowl is gold.
The chalice is decorated with various motifs throughout its different parts; in fact, the curved base is engraved with a Latin inscription along its outer circumference and features medallions framing the theological symbols of the four Evangelists: the lion, symbol of the Evangelist Mark; the ox, symbol of the Evangelist Luke; the angel, symbol of the Evangelist Matthew; and the eagle, symbol of the Evangelist John.
The knob on the handle, on the other hand, is decorated with Greek fret patterns and floral motifs.
The chisel work is at its most meticulous on the cup, whose outer rim is engraved with the Latin names of the twelve Apostles, and beneath each name is embossed the full-length figure of the apostle, framed by a niche.
The chalice is Romanesque in style not only because of the formal design of the sacred vessel but also because of the detail of the engravings, whose beauty and precision could only have been achieved by the skilled hands of master craftsmen. In fact, the master artisans at the Spanish company Molina—who create these precious works of art—are true artists in the field of jewelry.
